After several film franchises, a television series, and countless comic books of the hero Spiderman, his dark counterpart, Venom, takes center stage. This film depicts the mysterious alien substance as more of an antihero than a villain. It illustrates the journey that leads to a harmonious union between Venom and his host, reporter Eddie Brock, and the deep relationship that they develop.
The alien lifeforms to which Venom belongs, also know as a symbiote, requires a human host in order to survive. However, compatibility is important. Without perfect compatibility the host, the symbiote, or both die. What the scientists who conduct the experiments fail to realize is that compatibility is not biological. Instead, the symbiotes require compatibility of the heart. That is what makes them so picky.
Venom's perfect host is Eddie Brock, a passionate and fearless reporter. He cares deeply about the good of humanity. He stops at nothing to seek truth, even to his own detriment. He targets a powerful evil doer behind the horrifying experiments that causes countless suffering and leads to a symbiote outbreak. As a result, Eddie life is ruined. He loses his job, fiance, and reputation. However, he does not break. He continues to seek truth and justice.
This is why Venom bonds with him. Venom sees himself in Eddie. They are both underdogs. They are both underestimated by their colleagues. They feel undervalued. So, Venom gives Eddie strength, and Eddie gives Venom value. Eddie's thoughts and feelings become Venom's thoughts and feelings. They come to depend on one another and work together. Eddie's passion becomes Venom's passion. Eddie's values become Venom's value. Eddie's love become Venom's love. He teaches Venom to value life. Venom learns to become a hero.
Eddie's influence is so strong that he convinces Venom to chose the protection of humanity over his fellow species' desire to end the world. Venom sees the beauty of the world through Eddie's eyes. He feels Eddie's love for his world and his fellow mankind. Venom learns how contagious love can be.
We can all show contagious love to our fellow man. Christ showed this love on the cross. God showed this love by sending His son to save us. Just as we receive this love, we must spread it.
How contagious is your love?
