Unfriended: Dark Web is a much more thrilling and darker story than its predecessor, Unfriended . In this story, there is no ghost haunting a group of former friend and exposing their secrets. There is nothing supernatural about the Skype exchange. There is, however, an harmless game that goes very, very wrong. This sequel addresses society's reliance on technology, the power it holds in one's life, and the dark path it leads us.
Matias, a young man, steals a an abandoned laptop from a cafe in order to better communicate with his deaf girlfriend when instead he should have learned sign language. The class would have taken a lot of time. It would have been a difficult road. Yet, the rewards would have lived with him for the rest of his life.
Instead, he chooses an easier method. With the stolen laptop, he gets access to an app called Papaya that would dictate sign language for him over the internet. It seems like a handy aid for learning, but he quickly learns that it cannot function as a substitute. Just the same, technology is not a substitute for real life. Yet, real life can affected by technology in a horrifying way.
It's game night. Little do this Skype group know, a much more sinister game night is occurring around them. Powerful hackers take control of an typical card game and turn it into terrifying game of cat and mouse. The gamers are held hostage and eventually picked off one by one.
Despite the horror, Matias struggles to resist the temptation of the dark web: the peer pressure, the thrill, and the worldly benefits. His curiosity get the better of him. The stolen laptop show Matias just how horrifying it can be. It takes him down the path leading to the dark web where the depravity of the human race runs rampant. It is very dark and very real. There is no escape.
These dark players always appear distorted on camera. They don't appear to be human. This symbolizes the distortion of sin. Each player has a dark counter-part looming them, undetectable and distorted. Then, they take everything: his friends, his beau, his reputation, and finally his life.
Temptation leads to sin, which leads to the distortion of the soul. This leads to death. Darkness is ever present in the world. It consumes and destroys. Without the proper defenses, there is no defeating it. There is only one way to defeat the consuming darkness of sin. Only Christ can extinguish it. Only Christ can purify our hearts and souls. Only Christ can save us from death. By accepting Him as your savior, you may live forever. Your soul can be saved.
