Imagine if The Little Mermaid
(1989) does not end happily. Imagine Ariel fails in her mission: Eric does not save and marry her. Imagine that she remains in captivity, a slave for evil and her power drained from her for profit.
This is the story of The Little Mermaid
(2018).
In this version the mermaid Elizabeth sell her soul to the sorcerer Locke. When her prince fails to set her free, Locke enslaves her. As long as Locke possesses her soul, he has complete control of her. She is trapped forever.
Her only hope for freedom is through the restoration of her soul through Cam Harrison and his niece Elle who seek out Locke for a healing miracle. Though very ill, the young, innocent child is a firm believer. She believes in Elizabeth and her power. She believes the story behind the mermaid. She believes in the magic necessary to heal her.
The deeper Cam digs for information about Elizabeth and her healing water, the more he realizes the truth behind the myth of the Little Mermaid. like his niece, he learns to believe in mermaid and in magic. Elizabeth reaches out to him hoping he doesn't fail her. She tell him the truth. She trusts them. She shows him her true form. She makes him believe.
Once he believe he faces a choice. In order to save Elizabeth, he would need to forego healing his niece and incur the wrath of the evil sorcerer. Yet, he would be the hero that her prince fails to be. He rescues the lost soul from darkness just as Christ rescues his children from sin. All we need to do is accept it from Him. We need to love Him in return. We need to save other lost souls in kind. Let us be a hero for lost souls.
Disney plans to premiere a live action version of the original animated film in 2018. This is not that film. We look forward to that premiere. Stay tuned for further updates.
