BLACKkKLANSMAN is an inspiring comedy based on the true story of Detective Ron Stallworth. Set in the 1970s during the civil rights movement, Stallworth becomes the first black detective in the Colorado Springs Police Department. This monumental mark in history set in motion his historical investigation into the Ku Klux Klan.
In the midst of Stallworth's struggle to find a place among discriminatory colleagues, he becomes eager to prove himself as the educated and resourceful professional that he is. He completes every investigation assigned to him. He follows his orders despite how dangerous they can be. He remains professional yet firm in the face of discrimination. He follows the law. Above all, he is one of the few cops who fulfill the fundamental purpose of law enforcement: to keep the peace.
His partner, Flip, lacks motivation. To Flip, his position is just a job. His only understanding is the sense of community is in the department. Cops watch out for other cops, even at the cost of minorities in Colorado Springs. During their investigation, Flip developes empathy for the victims of severe racism. His understanding expands beyond the walls of the station. Ron's inspiration makes him a more passionate detective and a better man.
Not only does he inspire his fellow cops to become better, but his efforts also achieve a more positive reputation for the department among the minorities in Colorado Springs. During his investigation, he is harassed, sabotaged, and eventually beaten by his fellow police officers. This results in the end to reckless behavior of his corrupt colleagues. It motivates the officers to end the discrimination and marks the beginning of a better relationship between police and minorities.
The revolutionary investigation to infiltrate the Klan is more than just a prank (though the humor of it is certainly a perk). He and Flip obtain an incredible amount of insight on the members of the Klan and their leader, David Duke. During the investigations, these passionate partners prevent several cross burnings and a bombing. They save lives and protect minorities. They put several Klan members in prison. For good measure, they hurt the Klan's pride and embarrass David Duke.
Will racism live forever? Most likely.
Were Ron Stallworth's efforts in vain? No.
Ron Stallworth sets an example everyone who is willing to listen. He shows how to live peacefully in a violent world. The world needs people like Stallworth to show us the most effective way to fight racism. To fight evil.
Just as Christ fought evil. With peace. With love. With empathy. By building bridges.
