WHY DO WE SUFFER?

Cara Buckley • February 3, 2011

In times of trial, one would ask the popular question. “Where is God? Why would He allow this?"

The truth is God does not ensure the comfort and safety of our earthly bodies. His concern lies in the eternal salvation of our souls. Therefore, we must not expect Him to answer our every prayer for safety and security. It’s not His mission, nor should it be ours.

It serves as a cruel reminder of what is truly important during our time on Earth, the salvation of the world. Christ suffered and died for it. Are his followers fulfilling his Great Commission? Or do they let other priorities distract them? The real question isn’t why God allows suffering. It’s, are we suffering enough?

1 Peter 1:7 - “These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.” (NLT)

Though we suffer in this world, we will rejoice in the next. So, remember to keep your eyes on God’s glory, not your own. Suffering and death is a part of life. We all experience it; though not all can accept it. We should.
