THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER (2010) Movie Review

The newest renowned Narnia film will finally hit the shelves on Blu-ray and DVD on April 8. It will be the third remake of a seven-book series.

Though the book and movie don’t share many similarities, the movie expands on the important message that all children should learn, especially in a culture that markets exterior beauty and distorts the priorities of young women such as Lucy’s.

By the time of Voyage of the Dawn Treader, we can tell that Lucy is getting older and approaching womanhood. In the midst of that, she comes to believe that her value is measured by her appearance. Hence, she fiddles with her hair at the sight of cute soldiers and Susan’s letter suggesting a suitor making Lucy jealous.

Once in Narnia her will against temptation is tested, and she nearly fails. She finds a spell that makes her look beautiful in a mirror. However, it escalates beyond control when Aslan shows her what the world would be like without Lucy. Since she was the one to find Narnia, none of her siblings had ever defeated the White Queen, become kings and queens, or brought Prince Caspian to power. Without Lucy no one would know anything of Narnia. After showing Lucy such a picture, she understands her true value. She is indeed the most important one of them all.

Not only does she learn her lesson, but she also passes it along to the other girl on board. The girl finds Lucy to be a role model and comments that she wants to be just like her. However, Lucy advises her, instead, that the only person she should be just like is herself, which is good advice for all of us. The moral of the story is that you should be proud of who you are. It is the way God made you, and He made you that way for a reason.
