Set in the 1950's "The Vast of Night" is a well-crafted thriller that mimics "The Twilight Zone" and leads two young teenagers to discover the existence of alien life.
What begins as a mundane night in the secluded area of New Mexico becomes the most eventful occurrence in the town's history. Unfortunately, no one is outside to see or hear it due to a local basketball game that attracts most of the town. It leaves the streets of New Mexico quiet and abandoned, a prime opportunity for the aliens to come out to play.
What the aliens do not expect are two curious teenagers who are stuck at work that night: Switchboard Operator Fay Crocker and Radio DJ Everett Sloan. It begins with these two friends spend the night investigating a strange sound on the telephone, and it quickly escalates into a full-blown conspiracy.
Fay hears the sound over the telephone, and Everett broadcasts it to the public. This is where they meet two helpless citizens, Mabel Blanche and Billy. Society rejects these two people, because they are elder minorities. Billy's encounter leaves him with physical pain. Mabel's encounter leaves her with grief and loneliness. Both are left with hopelessness. Until they hear Everett's radio show. Thus, they feel they have no voice, and they spend their lives in silence. With nothing left to lose, they call in and speak up. Hostile aliens victimize humanity through pain and secrecy.
Anyone else would call them crazy and suspect them of terrible crimes. Not Fay and Everrett. They are a pair of understanding, open-minded people. More importantly, they have voices as portrayed through their positions. Fay, a bridge-builder, connects people, one voice to another. Everett broadcasts voices on the radio to the public, one voice to many.
That mysterious night in New Mexico becomes no longer a secret, because the story falls into the right hands. Fay and Everett spend their last night on Earth giving a voice to two voiceless people. These hostile aliens lose. They chose the wrong town if their goal is to remain a secret. In the end, whatever happens to the pair (whether they're taken or murdered) they leave behind the message. That message will spread. Because they have voices.
