This video resonates with me in a myriad of ways: as a Millennial, Christian, closet Daria fan, and victim of a predatory economy. I related to the character Daria in so many ways (complete with a fashion-focused
younger sister who was more like to identify me as her cousin instead of sister
). However, MTV was banned in our home because MTV was considered secular trash that brainwashed kids by our pastoral parents. So, my viewings of the show were secret and sporadic. In spite of it all, I couldn't shake my connection to the misunderstood bookworm trying to survive a system built against her.
This video helps me understand how relevant "Daria" was. Its message is downright prolific. Not only was the public school system rigged against its students, but also the job market that followed graduation. Employers looked for candidates with experience over education. My degree was deemed "worthless" by the day it arrived in the mail, and I had no real editorial experience to help me. Worse, none of my relatives or friends had the standing (or willingness) to help me. They simply judged me for not trying hard enough thanks to a particularly brutal smear campaign that kicked off the new year of 2010.
All except one man: David Bruce. Here is a man unlike anyone else in his Boomer Generation. He was the only person to ask me, "What is your goal, how can I help you reach it?" Thus, Thread of Truth (formerly Christ in Culture) was born. He gave me a platform that I could use as a portfolio in my future endeavors, and the rest is history.
Allow my experience to teach us a lesson about the state of our society, economy, and family dynamics. I believe there is a way to return to the thriving 90s. All generations need to work together. To the Boomers, I implore you. Stop judging our reaction to a crash that our elders caused. Ask yourselves what you can do to fix it. Listen to our needs. Ask yourselves what my father had the decency to ask me.
"How can I help you reach your goals?"
