Star Wars fans all over the world rejoiced today when the first trailer for The Last Jedi finally premiered.
Here is what we can safely deduce:
What does he mean when he says, "It's time for the Jedi to end"? Let us remember that Luke suffers an unbelievable loss when Ben Solo betrays him and destroys his academy. It is enough to send him into a life of seclusion and meditation. Many years before the beginning of The Force Awakens searching for the birth place of the Jedi Order. Years of study. Years of meditation. Years of contemplation. Years of attempts to overcome what he feels is a tremendous failure. He not only loses his pupils, he also loses his nephew (his family, his blood) to the Dark Side, a place he spent his entire Jedi life resisting.
That is no trivial failure. In light of this understanding, It would come as no surprise that Luke would want to either destroy any last traces of the Jedi Order or, more likely, take the Jedi Order into a new direction. Many Star Wars fans speculate that Luke becomes a Gray Jedi.
According to Wikia, the Gray Jedi Code states:
"Flowing through all, there is balance
There is no peace without a passion to create
There is no passion without peace to guide
Knowledge stagnates without the strength to act
Power blinds without the serenity to see
There is freedom in life
There is purpose in death
The Force is all things and I am the Force"
This would explain why Rey foresees balance between the light and the dark.
Will Luke be lost to the dark side. Or does he have something more meaningful in store? Only time will tell. I eagerly anticipate more updates on The Last Jedi throughout the year. In the meantime, I hope I can remain patient for the next eight months until the film premieres.
