It Chapter 2 concludes the reign of terror on Derry's young people by an evil alien monster taking the form of a terrifying clown. Twenty-seven years pass since the final encounter between Pennywise and the Losers Club in the first chapter, IT. However, their victory is short-lived. Pennywise comes back, and more children die. Thus, the Losers Club must return to Derry and complete the deed: destroy the monster.
Not only is the monster still alive, but also each member is haunted by inner demons. To face Pennywise, they must first defeat their demons. Only then can we be free of their fear. Pennywise represents their childhood trauma, and he preys on their fear.
While the film hammers the theme of unity on the head, a more important theme lingers beneath the surface, the theme of preparation. It is a theme that the film shares with the book. Pennywise strives to defeat the six struggling adults by preying on their emotions. Not just fear, but their anxiety, guilt, and anger. He drives them into the caves before they are ready, thus increasing the risk of their defeat.
However, all of the preparation in the world would not prepare them for their confrontation with the monster beneath the clown make up. Will conducts decades of research. He steals an artifact that supposedly contains it. He follows every rule. However, the ritual amounts to nothing.
The one true way to defeat the monster is to face IT without fear. They must become empowered with love. Deep, selfless love. The act of following the steps of an ancient ritual is not enough.
Love empowers us. There is no fear in love. It cannot be planned or prepared. It just is. Love defeats fear, just as the Losers Club use their love for one another to defeat a monster.
