MEGAMIND (2010) Movie Review

Megamind is a charismatic, comedic tip of the hat to the classic tale of Superman with the added twist where the hero retires, the villain becomes the hero, and the underdog becomes the villain.

Two alien babies come to Earth where they engage in consistent competition with each other while their city and reporter Roxanne Ritchi are always caught in the middle of it. However, both figures need each other in order for the rivalry to work. When Metro Man disappears Megamind is left with a feeling of inadequacy and regret. His life loses purpose, and he is forced to confront his destiny as Metro City’s new hero.

It was clear to me from start of the film that Megamind is never a true villain at heart. He is merely a confused man searching for his purpose, a long, frustrating journey full of failures and disappointment. Despite his urge to defeat his natural enemy, he is merciful, nonviolent, and tenacious, because he never hurts anyone. In fact, he goes out of his way on several occasions to keep Roxanne from physical harm. Tighten, the true villain, selfish, violent, and lazy, and he cause harm to the city and attempts to murder Roxanne.

Megamind not only proves his good qualities and repents, but he also falls in love. He decides to do anything and everything in his power to save Roxanne, once his enemy, and the city. Through his love, he improves his behavior, fights against true evil, and becomes the savior of Metro City. Thus, he finds that his true destiny is to be good, a good that was deep inside of him all along. He merely needed the chance to discover it.

According to Megamind a hero is defined as “someone with a noble heart and mind who puts the welfare of others before their own.”

Destiny is not the path given to us, but the path we chose for ourselves.
